You will be picked up from the pier by Mark Forbes, native Dutch Burgher and passionate photographer, on a gentle walking tour through his city. Guests follow him as he leads them through the streets and they listen as he recounts stories of the island's capital city. Mark is an intrepid city explorer and will unlock for you the backstreets and colorful alleyways of Colombo to showcase a vibrant and historical journey through the city. This is truly a wonderful way to immerse yourself in a bygone era, and to experience the city as your senses are awakened. The Pettah District is one of the oldest regions in Colombo, just east of the city center. It is a hive of activity. Take in the incredible bazaars, where once the streets were teeming with ox carts and alive with the sounds and smells of the sea, as rubber, tea, cinnamon, kittul treacle, rope and peacocks were loaded aboard ships. Explore hidden architectural treasures, such as the marvelous Jami-ul- Alfar Mosque and the Khan Clock Tower, built by the Khan family of Bombay. You will also see the Dutch colonial mansions of the spice era, as Mark brings these building and tells the stories of the old, influential families. Your walk will take you away from the typical tourist hotspots and allow you to truly experience the history of the port town that has evolved into Colombo. Along the way, you will explore lively street stalls of the bustling Pettah Bazaar. The bazaar is both a wholesale and retail market place, selling everything from trinkets to textiles, from vegetables to electronics and of course, plenty of spices. Along the way, enjoy the pristine architecture of the mansion that was built in the latter part of the 17th century and was initially the residence of Count August Carl Van Ranzow, the Dutch East India Company’s Governor. Then, proceed to the commercial hub of Colombo Fort, where you will pause for a refreshing drink at the Grand Oriental Hotel, where you will have the opportunity to ask Mark any questions you will have regarding this wonderful city. Your walk will come to an end at another colonial gem—the Old Dutch Hospital complex, once a functioning hospital during the 17th century, is now host to high-end restaurants, bars and shops. Photography enthusiasts can take some beautiful pictures of Dutch and English colonial architecture, portraits of persons of all religious and ethnic backgrounds, and breathtaking Sri Lanka scenes that are far from typical.
Follow Mark Forbes and his wife Ruvi on a walking tour through the narrow alleys and backstreets of Pettah.
Marvel at Colombo’s incredible bazaars, where seafaring traders once set out to trade with far off lands.
Conclude the trek with a drink at the Grand Oriental Hotel, the perfect place for questions and, perhaps, a toast.
